Halloween is just around the corner, and we all know what that means: Scary movies, pumpkin picking, trick-or-treating, and of course — lots and lots of candy. The spooky October holiday is not known for being the healthiest, but we have some ideas if you’re looking for a way to lessen your child’s sugar intake this Halloween!
Dark chocolate
Switch out your milk chocolate for dark chocolate. Not only does dark chocolate have less sugar, it’s also nutritious. By eating a few pieces of dark chocolate each day, you can lower your risk of heart disease and improve brain function. There are also many organic dark chocolate alternatives to your favorite candy bars.
Sugar-free gum
Instead of handing out candy to your children and trick-or-treaters, try investing in some sugar-free gum. There are countless fruity and minty flavors to choose from. It’s a unique alternative to candy that most children will love! Bonus: sugar-free gum is actually healthy for your smile. It helps produce saliva and keep your mouth clean of food particles.
Fruit snacks
Fruit snacks are an easy and healthy alternative to gummy candy. Typically, fruit snacks have less sugar than gummy worms or bears. Many of them are made with real fruit, too.
Popcorn
Plain popped popcorn is a surprisingly healthy snack. It has less fat and additives than potato chips bought in the store. Just make sure to floss after eating popcorn as it can get easily stuck in your teeth!
Hopefully this list gives you some ideas for reinventing your Halloween grocery list. And if you choose to indulge in some sugary sweets, be sure to brush and floss your teeth after!
